The Cattitude Trust was started to formalise what began as a sincere desire to make a meaningful difference to the cats of our city. When we started out as mere pet owners and animal lovers, rescuing the odd kitten and taking it off to one of the big shelters, it slowly dawned on us that shelter conditions are really not suitable for these sensitive creatures, despite the best efforts of the concerned groups, mainly due to over-crowded conditions.

Anguished at the situation, we started taking in kittens and when they didn’t find homes, we just kept them..until we realised we had reached full-house! It soon became evident that there is a crying need for homes, shelters, rescue facilities, a sterilisation programme….. we have taken just a few steps along the road to achieving  these aims. Our network fosters kittens to some extent, sincere volunteers are able to find more homes these days, and The New Indian Express ,  in its weekly Pets page, features a column that helps in finding homes. We assist in the feeding of many cats around the city, often with the cooperation of cat lovers or watchmen. Through word of mouth we advise people on cat care and nutrition, supply feeding bottles and formula to those who rescue orphans, and convince as many people as possible to sterilise their pets. We donate cat food and sometimes pay for veterinary care for those who have many cats and are not really economically equipped to do much for them. We assist other animal welfare organisations through collecting and distributing donated cookie crumbs, cat and dog food, advertising vinyls (invaluable in creating temporary shelter from the elements) etc. Through posters, a little bit of press exposure and networking we are making more people aware of what lovely pets cats make. When there is a need, we take on a fund raising effort, to rehabilitate homeless cats. Needless to say, cats aren’t the only animals we help, but they are the main focus.

- Our finest achievement so far is the Parasparam animal shelter, which was a joint effort between Cattitude and the Parasparam Ashram. Without Mother Viji's great compassion, energy and sheer commitment, the Shelter would have been an impossible dream

Our  Wish List:

*We would love to start a shelter for animals who lose their homes due to abandonment/death of owner/owner leaving town, as these cats just cannot survive in a normal shelter.

*We need to rent premises to keep cats in post op recovery, to house rescues till they find homes, and to have a place for volunteers to visit and learn handling, feeding, etc.

The road ahead is a long one, but we will walk it, hopefully not alone.

We are also planning fund raisers and publicity campaigns to raise awareness for the cats and their needs. (Cattitude now cares for over 170 animals, including over a dozen beautiful dogs).

If you would like to contribute to any of our efforts, as a one-time contribution,  or on an ongoing basis, please contact us. Every little bit helps. (Donations to The Cattitude Trust qualify for tax exemption under Section 80G of the Indian Income-Tax Act). If you know of people who would like to help us, please do tell them about our work and needs. Please remember, for each cat we save or rehome, literally hundreds go homeless, are victims of cruelty, or simply die of starvation or unattended health problems . Let’s please work together to change those figures.
